Types of Swimming Pools Design in Nigeria

There are four common types of swimming pools in Nigeria.

Acrylic Pools

This is a new type of swimming pool and uses the latest swimming pool construction technology. The pool walls are made from a see-through acrylic panel and sometimes the floor.

This is usually gorgeous. It can be built in a way that the see-through allows you to see something unusual like deep-sea animals or even at the extension of a tall building so you can see the floor. This is what a lot of people travel to go experience outside Nigeria. The acrylic panel has a glossy appearance and is 4 times stronger than concrete. It also does not shatter like Glass.

Acrylic pools are expensive and you should have a budget of over Ten million naira. The acrylic panel itself costs a lot because of its unique beauty and strength. This is why people use it to build pools in seemingly dangerous places to give their customers an amazing experience. It doesn’t have to be something extravagant all the time. It can be a simple swimming pool in a nice house. The Acrylic pool lasts the longest.

Concrete Pools

The concrete pool has all its walls built from concrete. They are the most common type in Nigeria and are very durable as they can be constructed in any soil type. They can also be built in the ground or above the ground. Most of the materials needed for building the concrete pool can be sourced locally.

The concrete swimming pool takes two months or more to build. You can choose to design it the way you please as long as you remain within the bounds of physics. The cost of installing the concrete pool is ₦2,000,000 – ₦10,00,000. It can last a lifetime.

Fiberglass Pools

This type of pool is made from fiberglass which is a reinforced plastic. It can be molded on the site where you want the pool to be or molded outside and transported to the desired location. Due to limits in what patterns can be molded, it cannot assume every shape or design. It is not as strong as the concrete pool.

The best way to install it is on the ground, on land that is firm because it can be deformed by ground movement.

The fiberglass pool is not so popular in Nigeria because there are very few companies producing fiberglass. The difference in soil type and topography in Nigeria also discourages people from choosing it. It cost about ₦3,000,000 to build and install. The fiberglass lasts for 10 -20 years.

Vinyl-lined Pools

These are prefabricated pools made from steel panels or rubber materials. It can be assembled on flat ground or above the ground and the walls are covered with vinyl lining. The vinyl pool is best suited for short-term use. It can be disassembled and reassembled in a new location. It can last for 10-15 years. You should have about ₦2,000,000 if you want to build this kind of pool.

Factors to Consider When Designing a Swimming Pool in Nigeria

Designing a swimming pool in Nigeria requires careful consideration of various factors to ensure functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal.

Climate and Weather Considerations

Nigeria’s diverse climate, ranging from tropical to arid, influences pool design and maintenance requirements. In humid regions, proper ventilation and drainage systems help prevent moisture-related issues such as mold and mildew.

In arid areas, water conservation measures and shading techniques can mitigate evaporation and sun damage. Additionally, incorporating features like shade sails, pergolas, and umbrellas provides relief from intense sun exposure, enhancing user comfort and safety.

Cultural Preferences and Lifestyle Factors

Cultural considerations play a significant role in shaping pool design preferences and usage patterns in Nigeria. Traditional values, social customs, and religious practices may influence the design and layout of pools, particularly in residential settings.

For example, privacy features such as high walls or landscaping may be preferred in conservative communities, while communal gathering spaces are valued in more sociable neighborhoods. Understanding the cultural context allows designers to create pools that resonate with local sensibilities and enhance community cohesion.

Maintenance and Sustainability Aspects

Sustainable pool design practices promote resource conservation and environmental responsibility. Incorporating energy-efficient equipment, such as variable-speed pumps and LED lighting, reduces energy consumption and operational costs.

Additionally, eco-friendly materials, such as recycled glass tiles and natural stone, minimize environmental impact and promote ecological balance. Implementing water-saving technologies, such as rainwater harvesting and efficient filtration systems, reduces water waste and ensures responsible stewardship of natural resources.

Regular maintenance and upkeep are essential to preserve the longevity and performance of swimming pools, safeguarding their beauty and functionality for years to come.

The world of swimming pool design in Nigeria is a dynamic fusion of tradition, innovation, and luxury. From traditional communal pools steeped in cultural heritage to modern marvels of engineering and design, Nigeria’s aquatic landscape offers a captivating array of options for leisure and relaxation.

As Nigeria continues to evolve and embrace modernity, the demand for well-designed swimming pools is poised to grow. By considering factors such as climate, culture, and sustainability, designers and homeowners can create pools that not only reflect individual tastes but also contribute to the overall well-being of communities.
